10 Airport Eateries You Must Try
Take time to indulge, We’ve all been to the airport where we just want to get something quick to eat or indulge in a tasty snack and it it right then or take it with us on our flight. When we go to the familiar places like McDonalds or Burger King, we know exactly what we’re getting. I love the convenience and quickness of fast food, but I also like to get something off the beaten path. So below are 10 quick eat food and snack outlets you should try on your next trip.
1. The Salt Lick
I come from a long like of grill masters on both sides of my family (shout out to Uncle Charles), so I know my barbecue. This iconic Texas restaurant has an outpost at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport that you can smell before you even see it. I highly recommend the brisket at the Salt Lick.
2. Praline Connection
There’s a outpost of this restaurant and candy story at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. If you’ve never had a praline (a luscious candy made from cream, sugar and pecans), you are missing a treat. Run — do not walk — to the Connection and buy some to take home.
3. Dish D’lish
I once had to spend almost 6 hours at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Of course, I was hungry and I had plenty of time to look at post-security food outlets. I also saw people flocking into the airport branch of this outlet for its sandwiches and salads. I had a chicken salad sandwich that I still dream about.
4. Nuts on Clark
I attended an airport concessions conference in Chicago. At the end of the conference, we were given a tour of Chicago Midway Airport — and samples — of the airport’s best. I had the popcorn here and fell in love. No lie – I actually will schedule a stopover at Midway if it works in my travel plans to get this popcorn. They also have an outpost at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
5. California Tortilla
The outlet of this fresh fast Mexican food outlet is in Terminal C at Washington National Airport. It serves a great variety of TexMex burritos, tacos, fajitas, quesadillas and salads, along with chips and a fantastic selection of hot sauces.
6. Northpoint
I have a friend who lives in the area and recommended I try the custard at this local favorite. I went to the outpost at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell Airport had the vanilla, and it was just delicious.
7. Deep Blue on the Fly
I’m a big fan of the food options JetBlue has in its signature Terminal 5 at JFK Airport. I’m a big sushi lover, and I always go to the carry-out version of this great restaurant. Splurge a little on one of their signature rolls. I’m partial to the King Crab California Roll, myself!
8. Boudin Bakery Cafe
Whenever I’m leaving the city of my birth, a loaf of Boudin (pronounce it Bo-DEEN) sourdough bread is in my carry-on as I depart from San Francisco International Airport. But if I have time to eat, I always get the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.
9. Krispy Creme
I love these donuts, and they taste just as good in the pre-security food court at Orlando International Airport. And you even get the iconic “Hot Donuts” sign!
10. Vino Volo
This is one of my favorite airport concessions of all time. And one of the reasons (besides the great wine selection) is their small snack plates. I cannot get enough of the cured olives and the Marcona almonds, which have a lovely hint of rosemary. The have locations at 24 airports in the U.S. and Canada.
